The Samara Spay/Neuter Group provides spay and neutering in the Samara area by volunteer Vets and support staff. Donations are greatly appreciated to help subsidize local pet-owners who cannot completely cover the costs for the procedure. The dogs and cats of Samara thank you for your participation and contributions. Woof, Bark, Purr, and Meow!

In 2011, a young Columbian woman by the name of Carolina came up with the idea of bringing veterinarians to the area to offer sterilization clinics to the locals. At this time, there were no veterinarians close by. The nearest was in Nicoya or Garza, about an hour’s car ride away. Stray dogs roamed the streets and the beach, and most of them were starving and sick, and of course, procreating. Something needed to be done, not only for the homeless animals but also to educate the locals as to the importance of spaying and neutering their pets and ultimately controlling the over-population in the dog and cat world. In short order, word of Carolina’s idea got out. Both locals and foreigners volunteered their time and the first clinic happened at Samara’s Community Center. Veterinarian students from the country’s Veterinarian College in Heredia (the Central Valley) came to perform the surgeries at a substantially reduced price. It was a great success! Then, several months later, another clinic was organized, and that is how it all started. Now, years later, the Samara Spay/Neuter Group is alive and well. And what a difference it has made! Today you will still see homeless dogs in Samara but for the most part, they are healthy, happy and fixed!

The Samara Spay/Neuter Group has now become an event that the locals look for and depend on. For several years now Dr. Marissa, Samara’s first veterinarian, has been a part of our clinics. She volunteers of her time offering consultations, vaccinations, and medications for the cost. In 2016 four clinics were held and approximately 200 dogs and cats were sterilized. We have a wonderful group of volunteers, both local and foreign who make each and every clinic such a success.

We would like to say a special and heartfelt thank you to all of our good friends for their ongoing, generous financial support, without which we would not be able to exist, including Lodge Las Ranas, Hotel Playa Samara, Gusto Beach, the First Friday Group, the Dominoes Group, and of course, the Samara-Carrillo Info Center, to name but a few.
